I am a conservative Republican who loves the environment. I thoroughly enjoy being outdoors and much prefer the mountains, streams, valleys, beaches and fresh air of the countryside to life in an urban setting. I long for the day on which I shall permanently return to the rolling hills and sunny meadows of my youth. Essentially, I love the Earth. The Earth is my friend and its animals are my little buddies. I would be nothing without the Earth and the Earth would be Mars without its living inhabitants. Therefore, we have an obligation to preserve the wonderfully unique characteristics of our planet. I will be the first to admit an endearing love for our planet and will uphold my duty as an Eagle Scout to protect her from harm. I am a strong proponent of recycling and am adamantly opposed to careless behavior with regard to an individual’s disposal of harmful waste products. I believe in the research and development of viable manufacturing and vehicular technologies that will shape the future of human existence. Energy independence from nations devoid of education and industry who reap the monetary benefits of naturally harboring massive oil reserves will greatly reduce the financial strain placed upon the shoulders of our populace. Ladies and gentlemen, I, Ryan J. Croft, am a conservative environmentalist! Surprised? Most likely. However, I must explain my sentiments before many of you get the wrong idea. Let’s begin, shall we?
There is an enormous difference between rational beliefs and actions with regard to the environment and the uncouth fundamentalism of those who wish to frighten everyone into believing that the Earth will be destroyed because of global warming. Throughout my years in college, I was subjected to exactly two forms of opinion– President Bush and Republicans are unintelligent and evil and global warming is the most pressing issue of my generation. For the purposes of this discussion, I will refrain from commenting on the first opinion. The most hilarious aspect of the global warming debate revolves around the sheer anger exhibited by environmental fundamentalists. We have unfortunately bared witness to the unnecessary chaos and violence caused by religious extremists and, sadly, they share a number of characteristics with the enviro-wackos residing in this country. Despite chaining themselves to trees and throwing paint on people, these wackos rarely exhibit their extreme views outside of conversation. Rarely do we hear about instances such as the abomination that occurred in Washington state in 2000. This example, of course, has nothing to do with global warming but I am touching on the anger of these individuals. When one gets angry, they typically begin to forfeit rational behavior and end up becoming a detriment to their cause, rather than a strong advocate. In my opinion, the anger that is created by the global warming scare and subsequent debacle introduced by the likes of former Vice President Al Gore and documentary film director Michael Moore has the opposite effect on the average American. Democrats and those of the liberal persuasion, it is unfortunate that you all believe Republicans are environmental antagonists. It is time for some education.

Earlier this week, I Googled “global warming pics” and the second image result was this picture. If you are currently tearing up because of this picture, please ask the person next to you to give you a hug. The caption says it all.
Global warming, for the most part, is a hoax. Ladies and gentlemen, the Earth has experienced temperature highs and lows throughout its history. Unfortunately, humans are at mercy to the world we inhabit. Should you need evidence, study the hurricane, volcano, and earthquake disasters we face each and every year. We are powerless to prevent them and the most we can do is hope to detect them beforehand and react accordingly. The global warming debate has only created rampant scandal within the scientific community and insane profits for the likes of Al Gore and everyone promoting “green” technology. Insane profits and scandal are two of the primary reasons enviro-wackos have high blood pressure, and yet they have forced us to journey down an endless path of “going green.” Two out of the three major auto companies here in America have been bankrupted thanks to fundamentalist fervor over their production of SUVs and their high carbon emissions. Lest we be quick to forget that for years, Americans lusted after these vehicles. Toyota came out with the Prius, a gas-electric vehicle that was supposed to revolutionize the automobile industry. I believe this vehicle has directly resulted in the downfall of our car companies. Why you ask? Liberal action groups, flush with cash from celebrities and average Americans, began a campaign against GM, Ford, and Chrysler while promoting environmentally “friendly” vehicles such as the Prius. What bothers me is that the very companies that received the most criticism were actually producing and have produced more hybrid automobiles than all of the other foreign car companies combined! We are now faced with a 15.4% unemployment rate in Detroit and Chrysler does not exist anymore. Does this make sense? I do believe that all of us should begin to purchase hybrid vehicles in the future but please be aware, they are not the savior of the Earth. The electric functionality of these cars does reduce your individual carbon emissions, however, the electricity used to charge their batteries is not created by a miracle of science. The vast majority of our electricity is produced by coal power plants. Oh dear! The cat is out of the bag now! As far as Vespa scooters are concerned, they are cool and trendy for college students to use and pretend like they are saving the world. The funny part about the Vespa community is, everyone loves the vintage Vespas–you know, the ones from the 70s that are “retro.” Unfortunately, those emit a greater volume of pollutants into our atmosphere than the Ford Excursion. If you truly wish to reduce carbon emissions, drive less or carpool. It’s that simple.
I have so much more to say and neither the time nor space to publish all of my thoughts in their entirety. I will publish another post dedicated to this topic in the future. I shall end with a cartoon.
**Thursday, December 3: The Most Ridiculous Clip of the Week

Thank you for finally saying that conservatives can be environmentalists, too! So often I tell people I am a conservative and the immediate reaction is that I am someone who litters next to a trash can on any given day of the week or who is happy to shoot the bird before its home is cut down for logging – neither of which would ever be true. Being a conservative and an environmentalist are not mutually exclusive and I like your argument that we need to do more to protect and expand the resources of our own land.
And as for global warming – if only the people who fell in love with Al Gore after watching his movie or hearing him speak could talk to the old man who works on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. This old man told me a particularly interesting story about how temperatures 50 to 100 years ago were much hotter than they are now – and he has the temperature charts to prove it. As is typical of many liberals, they need a good lesson in history in order to educate themselves about the realities of the changes in the earth’s temperature. But when the only information they hear and know is what is presented to them by Al Gore (of all people), reality becomes a tossed around word with no meaning – similar to Obama’s rhetoric of “change.”
Thank you, Ryan, for writing an insightful and important post on the falsities of global warming and the realities of the impact people such as Al Gore and “green” companies have had on the American Left. An interesting topic for you to look into would be “green schools,” as there is discussion that they may actually make students sick from the lack of FRESH air … air pumped through a vent is not and never could be “fresh.” Bravo, sir. Bravo.
Where’s the scientific refutation?
The only thing that really bears mention is the polar bear picture itself. Polar bears cannot swim indefinitely, and their new born can most certainly not swim for long periods of time, yet now need to to reach land after the hibernation season. Furthermore, polar bears depend on ice for hunting. NASA satellite imagery easily confirms the thinning and receding of Arctic ice.
I am not sure how this post is supposed to be taken seriously when you cite Michael Moore and Al Gore but make no mention of the extensive research conducted by NASA or through the National Academy of the Sciences, nor the thousands of published works available through Nature.
Perhaps this is, along with evolution, another example of what happens when science becomes politicized or muddled by uninformed pundits, business interests, and ideologues on both sides on the spectrum.
I think you pretty much covered the “global warming” from the conservative point of view and I agree. Those of us who watch and listen to this non-sense about climate change, global warming and listen to the dooms day predictions of the “end” if we don’t do something now, makes me wonder what people are thinking … however, they are not thinking. It kind of reminds you of those infomercials that if you buy now, they cut the cost in half and give you one free; everyone remember that nothing is “free”. It’s not only a false sales pitch with a multi-trillion price tag but those of us baby boomers were told by the same people in the late 70′s that we were heading into the next “ice age”. Hello! Yes, look at all of the unemployment being created in the name of “going green” and all the stimulus being spent on creating new “green” jobs … oh, oops I forgot the stimulus isn’t creating jobs! I do however know as a small business owner that all of this “global warming” and “going green” will definately be hitting us hard come January 1, 2010 when really hard choices will be made in order to decide whether we “go green” or save a persons job. Hold on tight, you haven’t seen anything with unemployment numbers yet! With all of the increases in taxes, the tax exemptions of the Bush years disappearing and more about to be forced down our throats by the robbery of our elected officals due to their overspending and little insight of how to balance a simple checkbook … we will just all live in a neat little community without jobs but very “green”! I want to just run through the streets like a modern day Paul Revere and scream “change has come, change has come” despite the change that was expected by the poor souls who have followed the sheperd from the fields towards the slaughter house and those of us conservatives who stood by saying, “don’t follow, its a trap” are left to pick up the pieces of this “global warming” debt. It is amazing that all of the people conservative and liberal who have written, called and stood on the steps of our Nations capital and demanded to be heard against this and other irresponsible schemes coming from Washington is almost a crime in itself … hey, listen up there is NO GLOBAL WARMING … many are speaking out with no one really listening! Thanks for giving us a place to speak our voices!
Since there isn’t a consensus in the scientific community about manmade global warming, that data has been selectively included/excluded to support “theories” and the global warming “scare” pushers won’t engage in a debate (only lectures where they cannot be challenged) we must admit that we just don’t really know enough about this subject. Certainly, we can have an impact on our environment and we should strive to be good stewards of our earth. I get a little skeptical, though, when those who want to push this agenda are benefiting financially, politically or are becoming more successful in raising taxes and keeping us “stupid and dependent” on the almight government machine.
